Why do we need the office ?

Great office design transforms your business.

We create a different kind of space; somewhere that inspires your teams and changes the way everyone works. Put simply, it’s somewhere to be proud of.

Expectations around work and the workplace have fundamentally changed.

We design office spaces that bring people together; where ideas flourish, and collaboration is second nature.

We craft a modern, flexible environment to enable new ways of working, keeping your teams inspired day after day.

The perfect office reduces stress and promotes healthy working. With a focus on wellbeing, we design your office to ease the mind and boost the brain.

A year of home-working has proved that it’s possible to work remotely, but is that what people really want?

87% workers believe their workplace needs to substantially change after Covid.

The office is the physical heart and soul of a business, reflecting its brand and culture.

Without it, you have a floating, fragmented collection of individuals loosely connected by a company name. Compelling intelligence about a company can be derived from a visit to the office and buying decisions are often made accordingly. Companies heavily invest in social capital which is held within their networks, their teams’ knowledge, their ideas and group resilience. Without a physical workplace, social capital is rapidly eroded.

The office grants us the ability to interact face-to-face whether in formal meeting rooms or in accidentally in corridors or breakout areas. Our body language, vocal interjections and camaraderie contribute to a gold standard of collaboration.

The next generation of talent make their decisions about where to work based on company values demonstrated through the place of work. People then absorb learning and gain wisdom through sitting alongside their more experienced colleagues. The handover of knowledge accumulates with time and creates intellectual and cultural capital for a business.

And then there is the unspoken chemistry that runs through every office. Synergies bring people together and relationships are formed. Chance encounters, struggles, challenges and shared victories nurture the soul of a company. Businesses make progress through their ability to innovate. Innovations come about when people are in the same room.

All the video conferencing technology in the world will never replace this human need to be together.

The factor that most impacted engagement, productivity and feeling connected to the company culture is when people like working from the office. Satisfaction with the office leads workers to feel 32 percent more engaged, 29 percent more connected to culture and 27 percent less likely to leave.

In addition, the characteristic of home working that most appealed to people in comparison to the office was having space for focused work.

The upshot is that the problem is not the office per se. It is to do with the experience the office offers to the people who use it and the choices they have about when and how to use it. It’s about the physical space, of course, but only within the context of a working culture that allows people to choose for themselves. Culture eats design for breakfast.

What we can expect from the best firms that seize the opportunity to offer people something better is a new balance between physical and digital space as more of them embrace the full potential of remote and flexible work for the first time.

The most likely outcome of this new era will not be the death of the office, but much better workplaces. These will be integrated into a new system of work which takes place in different times and places depending on people’s needs and those of the organisation.

So, organisations are left with a twofold challenge. The first is to create a great working culture that emphasises choice and empowers people to work in the best way possible. The second is to make one of those choices a great office that offers them more than their bedroom or local café.

That is an office that offers them space for focused work with plenty of acoustic and visual privacy. One with plenty of natural light and fresh air. One that brings them together with other people in pursuit of shared purpose. One that allows them to meet new people and learn. One that structures their days and enhances their social life.

Given what we know about how the office can deliver on these promises,

we can say with confidence that the new era of work will not see the death of the office. But it should see its rebirth.
